Course Overview
AVI1O online explores challenges facing the Canadian economy as well as the implications of various responses to these challenges. Students will explore the economic role of business, labour, and government, as well as their own role as individual consumers and contributors, and how all of these influence stability and variability in the Canadian economy. In CIE3M online, students will apply the concepts of economic thinking and the economic inquiry process, including economic models, to investigate the impact of economic decisions.
UNIT ONE
Foundations of Visual Arts
This introductory unit covers the basic elements and principles of visual art and design. Students will learn fundamental concepts like line, shape, color, balance, and movement. They will apply this knowledge while experimenting with various drawing techniques and media. Students will also be introduced to the creative process and art criticism. Key skills include observational drawing, composition, and analysis.
UNIT TWO
Drawing and Painting
In this unit, students will develop skills in drawing and painting. They will focus on techniques for observational and perspective drawing. Lessons will also cover portraying value and form through shading and hatching. Students will expand their painting skills through working with acrylics on canvas. Landscape painting will integrate their learning about perspective, value, and color mixing. Critical analysis will be integrated throughout.
UNIT THREE
Communication Through Art
This unit explores how visual art can communicate ideas, messages, and reflect society. Students will analyze examples of art as cultural communication. They will apply concepts from graphic design to posters bringing attention to social issues. Printmaking and collage projects will allow students to experiment with different techniques while conveying meaning. Portraiture will be connected to self-identity and self-expression.
UNIT FOUR
Developing Individual Artistic Voice
The focus of this unit is nurturing students’ individual creativity and style. Students will examine how artists derive inspiration and will curate their own inspiration boards. They will experiment with materials and techniques to develop a personal artistic style. Additional projects involve transforming discarded objects into art and researching careers in the visual arts. The goal is helping students find their unique artistic perspectives.
