THE ONTARIO CURRICULUM: Science
Course Overview
This course enables students to deepen their understanding of concepts in biology, chemistry, physics,
and earth and space science, while connecting science to technology, society, and the environment. Throughout the course, students will enhance their STEM skills through scientific research, experimentation, and engineering design processes to explore concepts and apply their knowledge to real-life and community-related situations. They will also develop transferable skills, becoming scientifically literate global citizens.
UNIT ONE
Chemistry
- Essential Question: How can understanding the physical and chemical properties of elements and compounds help us explore science, technology, and the environment?
In this unit, students will learn to define and use various terminologies related to the classification of matter. They will be introduced to the Periodic Table of Elements and learn to arrange electronic distribution using the Bohr-Rutherford model for the first 20 elements. Students will extend their understanding by relating atomic structure to an element’s position in the periodic table and comparing the physical properties of different elements within a group family.
UNIT TWO
Sustainable Ecosystems and Climate Change
- Essential Question: What does it mean to live sustainably? How can we reduce our ecological footprint?
Students will compare and contrast living and non-living features of land and water-based ecosystems, describe and compare nutrient cycling among the four different spheres, and discuss the maintenance and sustainability of these spheres along with human interactions. They will investigate human activities’ impact on different ecosystems, including pollution, acid rain, and environmental clean-ups.
UNIT THREE
Physics & Electricity
- Essential Question: How can electrical energy be transformed into useful forms of energy? What impact does the generation and use of electricity have on our world?
Students will explore the basic properties and principles of static and current electricity, predicting different materials’ attraction and retention of electric charges. They will investigate the transfer of static charge between materials through friction, contact, and induction. Additionally, students will examine how different devices use and control static electricity, improve electrical efficiency, and compare the basics of static and current electricity.
UNIT FOUR
Earth & Space Science
- Essential Question: What impact does space exploration have? Is space exploration worth pursuing for humans?
Students will investigate the characteristics and properties of various celestial objects visible from Earth in the night sky. They will discuss the Sun’s composition and energy source, as well as the motions of the Sun, Moon, and Earth. Students will critically assess the value of space exploration for humanity.
