Course Overview
ESLEO online is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and strategies to transition effectively to college and university preparation courses in English and other secondary school disciplines. This course emphasizes developing independence in academic tasks such as debates, workshops, essay writing, and comprehensive reading and interpretation of texts. ESLEO online also focuses on enhancing students’ ability to critically respond to both print and media texts, employing a variety of learning strategies and research skills.

UNIT ONE
Reading & Writing
Essential Question: How can utilizing prior knowledge enhance our reading and writing abilities?

In this unit, students will explore and share strategies that leverage their existing knowledge to improve their reading and writing skills. They will engage in activities designed to bolster critical thinking, which is essential for interpreting texts and crafting well-informed written responses.

UNIT TWO
Listening & Speaking
Essential Question: How does enhancing listening skills contribute to better speaking abilities?

This unit focuses on developing students’ listening and speaking skills, crucial for effective communication. Students will learn various techniques to improve their auditory skills, which in turn will help them become more articulate and confident speakers.

UNIT THREE
Novel Study: The Giver
Essential Question: How can fiction reveal truths about our world?

During this unit, students will delve into Lois Lowry’s “The Giver,” examining its themes, characters, and plot. Discussions will focus on how fictional works can reflect and offer insights into real-world issues and truths, encouraging students to draw parallels between the novel and contemporary societal concerns.

Media
Essential Question: How can we discern truth in media?

In this unit, students will critically analyze various media forms to distinguish between truth and fiction. They will learn to evaluate the credibility of sources and understand the importance of critical thinking in interpreting media messages. This will help them develop informed opinions and avoid misinformation.

Essential Question: How can we learn to believe what we see and read?

In this unit, students will look closely at the media and investigate truth vs. fiction in order to be more critical about what they read, and what is considered a reliable source of information to learn from.
