Course Overview
This course will enable you to acquire an understanding of the nature of philosophy and develop philosophical reasoning skills. You will apply this knowledge and these skills while exploring specialized branches of philosophy, including metaphysics, ethics, epistemology, philosophy of science, aesthetics, and socio-political philosophy. You will develop critical thinking and philosophical reasoning skills as you formulate and evaluate arguments related to various philosophical questions and theories. Additionally, you will develop research and inquiry skills pertinent to the study and practice of philosophy.
UNIT ONE
Reading Comprehension
Essential Question: How can utilizing prior knowledge improve our comprehension of texts?
In this unit, students will explore various strategies to enhance their reading comprehension at different stages of the reading process. Before reading, strategies such as constructing a word wall or creating a KWL chart will be discussed. During reading, techniques like note-taking and identifying main ideas will be emphasized, along with methods for synthesizing information. Post-reading strategies will include activities like writing summaries. Additionally, this unit will offer students chances to enhance their spelling, expand their vocabulary, learn about verbs, abbreviations, and syllables.
UNIT TWO
Listening & Speaking
Essential Question: How can attentive listening enhance our acquisition of knowledge?
This unit focuses on developing students’ listening and speaking skills, crucial for effective communication in various settings. Students will learn vocabulary related to auditory and oral communication and the importance of how something is said, as well as what is said, through the imitation technique. The unit also covers effective communication strategies, including attentive listening and understanding non-verbal cues. Additionally, students will explore the different vowel sounds in English.
UNIT THREE
Writing
Essential Question: How does writing well improve our ability to communicate?
Students will learn to organize their thoughts and express ideas clearly in writing. This unit covers common grammatical errors, how to correct them, and the essential elements of a well-structured paragraph. Students will also be introduced to various aspects of Canadian culture, including government structure and the indigenous peoples of Canada, enriching their contextual understanding and writing content.
UNIT FOUR
Novel Study
Essential Question: How does studying literature expand our knowledge?
In this unit, students will engage in a novel study, applying the strategies learned throughout the course. They will analyze literary elements such as setting, characters, and themes. The unit involves taking detailed notes and answering questions on specific chapters, deepening their understanding of the text and its implications.
