Course Overview
ESLCO online enhances students’ English language skills across listening, speaking, reading, and writing for various everyday and academic purposes. The course is designed to prepare students for mainstream educational programs by expanding their academic vocabulary and study skills. Additionally, ESLCO online introduces students to the concepts of Canadian citizenship, including rights and responsibilities, and addresses a range of contemporary Canadian issues.
UNIT ONE
Our Canada
Essential Question: How does a name shape identity?
In this unit, students will explore the concept of identity through the lens of Canada’s diverse cultural landscape. Building on prior knowledge from ESL-A and ESL-B courses, students will enhance their skills in reading comprehension, listening, and speaking by engaging with critical texts that discuss the multifaceted identity of Canada.
UNIT TWO
History
Essential Question: What distinguishes Canada’s unique history?
Students will delve into the rich and varied history of Canada, learning about the influential people, pivotal places, and significant events that have shaped the nation. This exploration will aid students in understanding the historical context of their new home and its impact on contemporary Canadian society.
UNIT THREE
Government
Essential Question: Is Canada truly a democratic country?
This unit focuses on the structure and function of Canadian government. Students will engage in reading and listening activities that help them improve their speaking skills while forming and refining personal narratives about democracy in Canada. Discussions will encourage critical thinking about the principles and practices of Canadian governance.
UNIT FOUR
Canadians
Essential Question: In what ways is the Canadian population diverse?
In the final unit, students will investigate the diversity of the Canadian population. Through personal reflections and connections to broader societal themes, students will use their own experiences to understand and articulate the complex demographic and cultural composition of Canada. This unit will foster an appreciation of diversity and promote inclusive perspectives among students.
