Course Overview
ESLBO online is designed to enhance students’ English language skills for both everyday and academic purposes. This course focuses on improving students’ abilities to participate in conversations, comprehend and analyze texts, understand and use grammatical structures, and link sentences to build paragraphs. Additionally, ESLBO online aids students in adjusting to the educational system in Ontario by broadening their understanding of the province’s and the nation’s diversity.

UNIT ONE
Our Stories
Essential Question: How can we use prior knowledge to make connections and better understand our world?

In this initial unit, students will share personal stories and ideas about their origins, using these narratives to foster connections with each other. They will enhance their critical thinking and writing skills by engaging with various stories from across Canada, helping them to relate their experiences to broader Canadian contexts.

UNIT TWO
Provinces and Territories
Essential Question: How does learning about our country help us understand ourselves better?

Students will explore the provinces and territories of Canada, gaining insights into the land they now call home. Through critical thinking exercises and story-based learning, they will deepen their understanding of Canada’s geographic and cultural landscape, connecting these insights to their personal experiences and identities.

UNIT THREE
Canada’s Land
Essential Question: How does exploring our country help us build a stronger sense of identity?

This unit encourages students to examine the physical geography and environments of Canada. By studying the diverse landscapes and reading stories from various regions, students will develop a greater appreciation for their new home and refine their ability to articulate this understanding through improved critical thinking and writing skills.

UNIT FOUR
Canada’s Population
Essential Question: How can understanding the diversity of Canada’s population help us connect with our world?

In the final unit, students will investigate the demographic makeup of Canada, focusing on the diverse backgrounds and cultures that constitute the nation’s population. Through discussions and readings about different communities across Canada, students will enhance their ability to make meaningful connections and deepen their understanding of the multicultural context they live in.
