Students will engage in basic conversational English, read adapted texts, write simple sentences, and learn about Canadian culture and society, all aimed at helping them adapt to their new lives in Canada.
UNIT ONE
Reading Comprehension
Essential Question: How can prior knowledge enhance our understanding of a text?
In this unit, students will explore various strategies to improve reading comprehension at different stages of the reading process. They will learn preparatory strategies like creating a word wall or a KWL chart, techniques for engaging with the text during reading such as note-taking and key idea identification, and post-reading strategies like summarizing. Additionally, the unit offers opportunities to practice spelling, learn about verbs, abbreviations, syllables, and vocabulary building.
UNIT TWO

This unit focuses on developing students’ listening and speaking skills. Students will learn essential vocabulary related to these skills and understand the importance of how something is said, not just what is said, through the imitation technique. Students will also be introduced to the different vowel sounds in English to aid pronunciation and understanding.
UNIT THREE

Students will learn to organize their thoughts and express them clearly in written English. This unit covers common grammatical errors and their corrections, paragraph structure, and the coherent organization of ideas. Additionally, students will learn about aspects of Canadian culture, including the government and Indigenous peoples, enriching their contextual understanding and enhancing their ability to engage with the community.
UNIT FOUR
Novel Study
Essential Question: What can we learn from studying literature?
In the final unit, students will apply the reading and analytical skills developed in earlier units to a novel study. They will explore the setting, characters, and themes of the novel, employing strategies like note-taking and chapter questioning to deepen their comprehension and appreciation of literature. This unit aims to enhance students’ literary analysis skills and foster a deeper understanding of the narratives within English literature.
