Course Overview
This course provides opportunities for students to begin to develop and apply fundamental skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the language of study. Students will communicate and interact in structured activities and practical situations, with a focus on matters of personal interest and familiar topics, and will read and write simple texts in the language. Throughout the course, students will acquire a general understanding and appreciation of diverse communities in regions of the world where the language is spoken. They will also develop skills necessary for lifelong language learning.
UNIT ONE
Introduction to Chinese
In this unit, students will get introduced to the fundamentals of Mandarin Chinese and will get familiar with Mandarin Chinese. Concepts such as Pinyin and pronunciations coupled with other essential topics will be taught enabling the students to develop some fluency with the language.
UNIT TWO
Interacting in Chinese
This unit of the course aims at taking the communication of the students a step further by enabling them to introduce themselves to the language and be able to develop a varied vocabulary in order to communicate effectively. Students will develop an understanding with the core concepts of the language allowing them to easily progress to the next units.
UNIT THREE
Foods, Drinks and the Culture
In this unit, students will explore the area of Mandarin Chinese that relates to the foods in China and introduce them to the Chinese culture and conventions. This unit is essential for students as it will enable them to get fluent in conversations involving foods and their preferences.
UNIT FOUR
More in Chinese
This last unit aims to introduce students to the Chinese history and culture along with some more concepts that will help them get familiar with the Chinese culture. Students will explore numbers in greater detail in this unit.
