Course Overview
This course explores the interrelationships within and between Canada’s natural and human systems, and their connections to systems in other parts of the world. Students will examine environmental, economic, and social geographic issues related to transportation options, energy choices, and urban development. They will apply geographic thinking concepts and the geographic inquiry process, including spatial technologies, to investigate various geographic issues and develop potential approaches to making Canada a more sustainable place to live.
UNIT ONE
Introduction to Canadian Geography Online
- Essential Question: What are effective communication methods for conveying complex geographic concepts?
In this unit, students will learn basic concepts in Canadian Geography while also developing the skills needed for success in this online format.
UNIT TWO
A Geographer’s Essentials
- Essential Question: What tools can be utilized to analyze geographic concepts?
Students will use the geographic inquiry process and geographic thinking concepts to investigate issues related to Canadian geography. They will apply skills, including spatial technology skills, in everyday contexts and identify careers where a background in geography could be beneficial.
UNIT THREE
Canada’s Physical Environment
- Essential Question: What processes have shaped the variety of landform regions in Canada?
Students will gain an understanding of plate tectonics and how Canada’s physical diversity is connected to geological development. They will explain the rock cycle and describe the four geological eras.
UNIT FOUR
Patterns in Population and Immigration
- Essential Question: What influences Canada’s population patterns, and how do these patterns impact Canadian society?
Students will analyze patterns in Canada’s population and assess the implications of these trends locally, nationally, and globally. They will examine geographic issues related to population demographics and settlement patterns, and evaluate strategies to address the economic, environmental, social, and political implications of an aging and increasingly diverse population.
UNIT FIVE
The Canadian Economy
- Essential Question: What resources does Canada rely on for economic development, and how does this development impact different regions in Canada?
Students will explore the availability and development of natural resources in Canada. They will examine trade relationships with other countries and the economic development of the country.
UNIT SIX
Sustainable Communities
- Essential Question: What are the implications of urban growth and development?
Students will understand how community infrastructure affects livability and sustainability. They will analyze issues related to land use, urban growth, and human systems, and develop strategies to make their communities more sustainable.
