GRADE: 12 (University)
AVAILABILITY: Spark Asher Academy Online
THE ONTARIO CURRICULUM: Science

Course Overview
SES4U online is designed to enhance students’ understanding of Earth and its cosmic environment. This course investigates the universe’s properties, forces, and the scientific methods used to understand them. It delves into Earth’s materials, its internal and surface processes, geological history, and the interactions of Earth’s systems over time. The course integrates concepts from biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics to explore geological and astronomical phenomena, both observable and theoretical.

UNIT ONE
The Science of the Universe
Essential Question: How do scientific theories about the universe evolve with new evidence, and how do advanced technologies enhance our understanding of its origins and development?

In this unit, students will explore the fundamentals of astronomy, focusing on the origin and evolution of the universe and the stars within it. They will examine the latest theories and the technological advancements that have improved our understanding of the cosmos, emphasizing how scientific knowledge is continually reshaped by new discoveries.

UNIT TWO
The Science of the Solar System
Essential Question: What impact do space exploration technologies have on society, the economy, and the environment?

Students will narrow their focus to the solar system in this unit, studying its formation about 4.6 billion years ago from a vast cloud of dust. They will explore how our solar system developed and the role the Sun has played in fostering conditions suitable for life. The unit also considers the societal, economic, and environmental implications of space exploration technologies.

UNIT THREE
The Science of the Third Rock from the Sun
Essential Question: How have Earth’s changing conditions over time impacted life?

This unit focuses on Earth’s dynamic geological history. Students will study how Earth’s cooling phase led to significant geological events and formations. They will learn about the methods scientists use to interpret the geological record and how these events have influenced life on Earth across various epochs.

UNIT FOUR
The Science of Ores, Mines, and Power
Essential Question: How do different types of rocks originate, and what are their properties, characteristics, and uses?

In the final unit, students will examine the science behind the extraction and utilization of Earth’s mineral resources. Starting from the earliest mining activities in Swaziland to modern extraction processes, students will explore how various ores and minerals are used in today’s world. They will learn about the different types of rocks, their origins, properties, and how they are processed into usable materials. This unit will also discuss the environmental and economic aspects of mining and resource use.
