Course Overview
This course focuses on developing leadership skills essential for managing a successful business. Students will analyze the role of a leader with a focus on decision- making, managing group dynamics, handling workplace stress and conflict, motivating employees, and planning. Effective business communication skills, ethics, and social responsibility will be emphasized throughout the course.
UNIT ONE: Political Foundations
Essential Question: What are the conceptual and ideological bases of our current political institutions?
- This unit introduces the foundational theories and structures of political systems both in Canada and internationally. Students will examine how political theories have been applied historically and continue to influence modern governance. The unit also explores how factors like religion and nationalism shape political systems and diplomatic relations.
UNIT TWO: Governments and Canadian & International Politics
Essential Question: How do governments function in reality, and what are the impacts of political ideologies on government structures?
- Students will delve into the workings of governments and their interactions with international bodies. This unit covers the classification of nations, the roles and impacts of intergovernmental organizations, the significance of treaties and foreign policies, and the dynamics of international political relations.
UNIT THREE: Non-Government Action on Canadian & International Political Issues
Essential Question: Is government the only avenue for affecting global politics? How do non-governmental entities influence policy?
- This unit focuses on the role of non-governmental actors in shaping political landscapes. Students will investigate how individuals, groups, and organizations outside of government can drive change on both local and international scales, and how these efforts are interconnected.
UNIT FOUR: Rights and Powers in the International Community
Essential Question: What rights and powers do NGOs have on an international scale? How does the international community function?
- In the final unit, students will explore the influence and limitations of non-governmental organizations in the international arena. The unit examines the framework of international human rights, the enforcement of these rights, and the overall functioning of the international community concerning non-state actors.
Assessment
- Coursework (70%): Assessments throughout the course will include a mix of written assignments, projects, and interactive discussions that challenge students to apply their learning to real-world political scenarios and current events.
- Final Evaluation (30%): The course concludes with a comprehensive project that allows students to demonstrate their understanding of the course material through research, analysis, and presentation. This project encourages students to synthesize their learning and apply their inquiry skills in a practical and meaningful way.
