Course Overview
CHI4U online provides an in-depth exploration of Canada’s historical development and the evolution of its national and cultural identity. This course examines the critical events, influential figures, and significant movements that have shaped Canada from pre-contact times to the present. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of how various communities have contributed to and shaped Canada’s identity and heritage. CHI4U online emphasizes historical thinking and inquiry skills, encouraging students to analyze evidence, understand various perspectives, and critically assess the forces that have shaped Canada.

UNIT ONE: Canada, Origins to 1776
Essential Question: What events, people, and organizations helped to shape Canadian identity to 1776?

  • This unit covers the earliest periods of Canadian history, from pre-contact societies through European exploration and early settlements to the American Revolution. It explores how interactions between Indigenous peoples and Europeans set the stage for later developments in Canada’s identity.

UNIT TWO: Canada, 1776 to 1867

  • Students will delve into the formative years leading to Confederation, including the impact of the Loyalist migration, the War of 1812, and political reforms. This unit examines how these events and the figures involved contributed to the foundations of Canadian governance and identity.

UNIT THREE: Canada, 1867 to 1945

  • Focusing on the period from Confederation through the two World Wars, this unit looks at Canada’s maturation as a nation. Assessment

  • Coursework (70%): Includes a variety of assignments such as essays, project presentations, and discussions that encourage students to apply historical thinking skills to analyze how past events have influenced current Canadian identity.
  • Final Evaluation (30%): Comprises a major research project and an exam. The project encourages students to conduct in-depth research on a specific event or figure that has shaped Canadian history, while the exam assesses their overall understanding of the course material.
