Course Overview
This course allows students to develop their critical and creative skills, as well as their overall literacy and
communication skills, all of which are essential for success in academics and daily life. Throughout this course, students will study the content, form, and style of various informational, graphic, and literary texts from Canada and abroad. They will also have the opportunity to practice using language with precision and clarity by creating oral, written, and media texts in a variety of practical and academic forms.
UNIT ONE
Matter, Periodic Trends, and Chemical Bonding
- Essential Question: How can the periodic table help us understand matter?
This unit delves into the properties and classifications of elements and compounds, emphasizing atomic structure and its influence on physical and chemical properties.
UNIT TWO
Chemical Reactions
- Essential Question: How can we understand the reactions of everyday substances?
Students explore predicting reaction products and the practical application of Green Chemistry in industries, supplemented by simulated lab experiments.
UNIT THREE
Mole and Reaction Stoichiometry
- Essential Question: How can we quantify substances that are not directly measurable?
The unit introduces stoichiometry and the mole concept, focusing on calculating matter quantities needed for chemical reactions through progressively complex simulated lab activities.
UNIT FOUR
Gases and Atmospheric Chemistry
- Essential Question: How do hot air balloons work?
Explores gas laws and theories to explain macroscopic behaviors of gases, linking stoichiometry with real-world applications and safety considerations of compressed gases.
UNIT FIVE
Solutions, Solubility, Acids, and Bases
- Essential Question: What are we drinking?
Students examine why water is an effective solvent, learn to calculate solution concentrations, and assess the impacts of these solutions on health and the environment.
