Course Overview
This course emphasizes the development of literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills through the study of works in English by Aboriginal writers. By analyzing literary texts and media works, you will gain an appreciation for the richness and complexity of Aboriginal writing. You will also conduct research, analyze the gathered information, write persuasive and literary essays, and examine the relationship between media forms and audiences. A key focus will be the further development of your understanding of English-language usage and conventions.
Unit 1:
Exploring Indigenous Identities, Communities, and Histories
This unit focuses on the diverse identities, family roles, and impacts of colonization on First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples, exploring how land and media shape their identities.
Unit 2:
Deepening Understanding of Indigenous Voices
Students learn the foundations of Indigenous storytelling, character development through cultural worldviews, and the resilience found in these narratives amidst historical disruptions and injustices.
Unit 3:
Indigenous Sovereignty
The focus is on sovereignty concepts, historical perspectives, land claims, and media biases, helping students understand the current and future states of nation-to-nation relationships and sovereignty issues.
Unit 4:
Moving Towards Reconciliation
This unit encourages becoming an ally, building cross-cultural understandings, and engaging with reconciliation actions, including listening to survivors and learning from calls to action.
