Course Overview
HSP3U online is designed to engage students in critical thinking about key concepts and issues within anthropology, psychology, and sociology. This course encourages students to understand and apply the research methods and theoretical approaches used by social scientists. Throughout HSP3U online, students will explore these theories from diverse perspectives, engage in social science research, and acquaint themselves with contemporary discussions in these fields.
UNIT ONE
Self and Others
Essential Question: What are the core principles of the social sciences, and how are they relevant to our everyday lives?
In this introductory unit, students will explore their relationships with others and the foundational theories of anthropology, psychology, and sociology. They will study the work of pioneering social scientists and gain an introductory understanding of how these disciplines illuminate various aspects of human behavior and social structures.
UNIT TWO
Social Structures
Essential Question: How are social structures organized within Canadian society, and what support do they provide for individuals with mental disorders?
In this unit, students will delve into the social structures that influence daily life, with a focus on the psychological aspects of the course. They will begin to identify topics for an independent study unit (ISU) and consider how to apply social science research methods to survey their peers on these topics. This exploration will enhance their understanding of how social structures operate and support individuals with mental health challenges.
UNIT THREE
Social Organizations
Essential Question: How does socialization influence individuals throughout different stages of life, and what impact does it have on the social organizations we interact with?
This unit focuses on the role of social organizations in shaping human behavior and society. Students will examine how socialization processes affect individuals at various life stages and analyze the influence of these processes on social organizations. The unit will also include the completion of the ISU research report, allowing students to apply their learning to a real-world context and synthesize their findings from both anthropological and sociological perspectives.
