Course Overview
This course allows students to develop their critical and creative skills, as well as their overall literacy and communication skills, which are essential for success in academics and daily life. Students will study the content, form, and style of various informational, graphic, and literary texts from Canada and abroad. They will also practice using language with precision and clarity by creating oral, written, and media texts in a variety of practical and academic forms.
UNIT ONE
Media Studies
- Essential Question: How do we assess media’s effectiveness in engaging our audience? How can media be used to convey biases and stereotypes?
In this unit, students will learn to analyze media texts for both explicit and implicit messages. They will engage with texts of increasing complexity to assess how effectively media reaches its audience and how it can be used to convey biases. Students will scrutinize product placements in advertisements and will also create their own media to disseminate information they deem important to the public.
UNIT TWO
Interpreting Literacy Through Journalism
- Essential Question: How will we use our critical thinking to interpret various texts and their implications on society?
This unit involves students delving into various informational, literary, and graphic texts within journalism. They will apply critical thinking to interpret how these texts convey meaning and their effects on society at large. Students will learn to recognize different forms of texts, their features, and stylistic elements. By the end of this unit, students will have improved their vocabulary comprehension and will be able to pinpoint their reading strengths and areas needing enhancement.
UNIT THREE
Serial Podcast
- Essential Question: How can studying a podcast enhance our oral communication skills through listening, analyzing, and critiquing?
Students will enhance their oral communication abilities by engaging with the podcast titled Serial. This 12-part series examines the murder trial of Adnan Syed, convicted in 2000 of murdering his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, despite his claims of innocence. The popularity of Serial has led many to doubt his guilt. This unit emphasizes learning to listen actively and base communications on informed and critical thinking, putting students in the role of judges.
UNIT FOUR
Debate
- Essential Question: How can we present diverse viewpoints on various debate topics?
In this unit, students are tasked with producing, collecting, and organizing ideas and information to represent diverse viewpoints on debate topics. They will use their understanding of form and style to draft and refine their arguments, employing appropriate informational, literary, and graphic forms for their intended audience. Students will use their knowledge of writing conventions to edit, proofread, and publish their work, ensuring it is free from errors and effectively communicated. Towards the unit’s end, students will evaluate their debating abilities, identifying strengths and areas for improvement.
