Course Overview

This course explores issues and challenges facing the Canadian economy and examines the implications of. This course equips you to understand and navigate the ever-evolving world of media communication. You’ll develop critical thinking skills, aesthetic and ethical judgment, and proficiency in various communication methods (viewing, representing, listening, speaking, reading, and writing) through analyzing media messages, audience responses, and by creating your own media works.

UNIT ONE
Decoding the Media Landscape (30 hours)

  • Launchpad: We’ll kick things off by exploring the Five Key Concepts of Media and how they shape our understanding of the world. You’ll apply your knowledge through engaging activities and tasks.
  • The Power Triangle: Learn about the Media Triangle, a powerful tool for analyzing media messages. You’ll then put your skills to the test by applying it to a media text of your choice.

UNIT TWO
The Art and Science of Advertising (30 hours)

  • Unmasking Ads: This unit dives into the world of advertising, exploring the strategies and techniques used to influence consumers. You’ll develop your critical thinking skills by learning to deconstruct ads and identify persuasive tactics.
  • Creating with a Cause: Ready to put your learning into action? You’ll design your own advertising campaign, crafting a powerful message around a chosen social issue.

UNIT THREE
Social Media Revolution (30 hours)

  • The Power of Likes and Shares: Explore the profound impact of social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter on our lives. We’ll delve into how social media has transformed the way we work, think, mobilize politically, and ultimately, connect with the world.

UNIT FOUR
Putting it All Together: Final Project (20 hours)

  • Brand New You: Time to showcase your skills! You’ll create a brand and design a multi-media advertising campaign, applying the theories and concepts you’ve mastered throughout the course. This final project is your chance to shine and represents 30% of your final grade.
