Course Overview

This course provides students with opportunities to further develop their skills and knowledge in visual arts. Students will explore a range of subject matter through studio activities and will consolidate their practical skills. Additionally, students will analyze artworks and study aspects of Western Art History, as well as art forms from Canada and other parts of the world.

UNIT ONE
Launching Your Artistic Journey

  • Essential Question: What’s the artist’s process? How does it help create amazing art? How can sketchbooks become an artist’s secret weapon? And how do copyright laws protect artists’ work?

In this unit, we’ll refresh our memory on the building blocks of design and how to use them to create powerful visuals. We’ll revisit the critical analysis process, a skill you’ll use to critique your own art and the work of others. You’ll learn the best way to present your sketchbook pages for this course, and we’ll explore how Canadian copyright law impacts artists like you.

Unit Two
Capturing the Human Face in Graphite

  • Essential Question: How have different cultures portrayed the human form throughout history? What are the pros and cons of using graphite as a drawing medium?

This unit will focus on techniques used by graphite artists to create realistic textures and shading. You’ll experiment with different pencil types, create awesome sketchbook pages, and complete a final portrait drawing. We’ll also explore the work of two influential Canadian artists who made their mark in the drawing world. Finally, you’ll learn how to tell a story through your artwork in your final piece.

Unit Three
Creating Space with Pen and Ink

  • Essential Question: How can we show depth and space on a flat surface? How have diverse Canadian artists used ink to express themselves? What are the advantages and challenges of working with ink?

Get ready to master technical pens and explore various shading techniques! We’ll meet two Canadian artists whose ink work showcases contrasting approaches to capturing the essence of Canada. This unit will challenge you to create and analyze your own unique ink creations.

Unit Four
Painting Still Lifes with Watercolours

  • Essential Question: What sets painting apart from dry media like pencils? How have Canadian artists from different backgrounds used watercolours to communicate their ideas? What makes watercolours both exciting and tricky to work with?

This unit is your introduction to watercolours, a painting medium with deep roots in Canada. You’ll delve into the world of colour theory and mixing, explore different brush techniques, and learn about the unique properties of watercolour paints. We’ll meet Canadian watercolour masters who were inspired by Canada’s natural beauty, and you’ll create your own still life painting using objects from nature.

Unit Five
Sculpting Stories in Clay

  • Essential Question: How does creating art in 3D differ from working in 2D? How have Canadian artists of diverse backgrounds used relief sculptures to express themselves? What are the pros and cons of using clay as a sculpting medium?

Get ready to explore the relief sculpting techniques of renowned Canadian artist Barbara Reid, alongside other inspiring Canadian relief sculptors. You’ll experiment with Reid’s techniques before creating a final piece that reflects your own vision of Canada. This unit will give you a chance to apply your knowledge of colour mixing in a new way, and you’ll learn how to adjust lighting conditions for photographing your sculptures.
