Course Overview
This course focuses on strategies to help students become better, more independent learners. Students will develop and apply literacy and numeracy skills, personal management skills, and interpersonal and teamwork skills to improve their learning and achievement in school, the workplace, and the community. The course aims to build students’ confidence and motivation to pursue opportunities for success in secondary school and beyond.
UNIT ONE
Personal Development and Learning Skills
- Essential Question: How can understanding my interests, abilities, and learning style help me succeed?
In this unit, students will identify their interests and abilities, gaining insight into their unique “smarts” and learning styles, and understanding their role in the learning process. The focus will extend to sharpening personal management skills, including time and personal space management. Additionally, students will learn goal-setting techniques, effective study skills, and the identification of healthy lifestyle choices that support learning and personal growth.
UNIT TWO
Integrative Skills and Practical Applications
- Essential Question: How can reading strategies, math skills, and problem-solving techniques be applied to real-life situations?
In this unit, students will employ a diverse range of reading strategies to comprehend various texts and visual information. They will apply math procedures and concepts to real-life tasks, creating different texts and graphics tailored for distinct purposes and audiences. This approach will help students establish a connection between problem-solving in math and other areas of life. Additionally, students will identify actions, characteristics, skills, and resources that foster learning and growth. They will take the initiative to enhance both their physical and social-emotional environments, exhibiting behaviors that reflect self-motivation and self-reliance.
UNIT THREE
Career Planning and Resource Utilization
- Essential Question: How can identifying personal interests and utilizing available resources enhance academic and career success?
In this unit, students will adeptly locate and record the information required in various situations. They will identify careers and volunteer opportunities aligning with their interests and abilities. Students will strategically plan school courses and discern graduation requirements. Additionally, they will identify school and community resources that support learning, explaining how these resources can be accessed. The unit also emphasizes effective communication skills, empowering students to seek information, assistance, and advocate for themselves when needed.
UNIT FOUR
Study Skills and Post-Graduation Planning
- Essential Question: How can effective study skills and self-awareness impact academic success and future goals?
In this unit, students will showcase effective use of study skills and test-preparation strategies across various subjects, evaluating their impact on academic success. They will identify their learning styles, personal qualities, and learning challenges by analyzing both successful and unsuccessful past experiences. Moreover, students will engage in envisioning how to apply their new knowledge and skills after graduation.
The exam will be proctored and constitutes 30% of the final mark.
