Course Overview
This course is designed to enhance the oral communication, reading, writing, and media literacy skills necessary for success in secondary school academic programs and daily life. Students will analyze literary texts from both contemporary and historical periods, interpret and evaluate informational and graphic texts, and create oral, written, and media texts in various forms. A key focus will be on the selective use of strategies that contribute to effective communication. This course aims to prepare students for the compulsory Grade 11 university or college preparation course.
UNIT ONE
Persuasion and Propaganda
- Essential Question: Why is it important to be able to understand and create persuasive writing pieces?
In this unit, students will explore the art of persuasion and the components of a strong thesis statement. They will learn the difference between inductive and deductive logic, identify logical fallacies, and understand how to spot them. Students will explore various types of essays and learn how to identify them. Additionally, they will delve into the world of propaganda, analyzing its techniques and effects.
UNIT TWO
Shakespeare: Macbeth
- Essential Question: Why is it important to understand the society of the time period I will be reading about? How can I use my new understanding of Shakespearean language to create a deeper understanding of his works?
In this unit, students will read and analyze Shakespeare’s Macbeth. They will learn about Shakespearean vocabulary and the historical context of the play. Through detailed analysis, students will gain a deeper understanding of the play’s themes, characters, and language.
UNIT THREE
Novel Study: Animal Farm
- Essential Question: How can a piece of fiction reflect real-world issues? Why might authors choose to use their literature as a vessel to comment on the world?
In this unit, students will read and analyze George Orwell’s Animal Farm, considered one of the best political allegories ever written. Students will learn about political allegory and analyze the allegorical meanings of the characters. They will draw parallels between the novel’s themes and real-world issues, understanding how fiction can comment on and critique society.
UNIT FOUR
Music as Poetry
- Essential Question: Does poetry exist all around me, and if so, why is it such a prevalent element of our lives?
In this unit, students will learn about poetic devices and practice using them. They will read and analyze poems, examining the science of music and poetry. Students will explore how rap and hip-hop music are especially rich in clever wordplay and poetic devices, understanding the prevalence and impact of poetry in everyday life.
