Course Overview

This course emphasizes learning through practice, building on students’ existing knowledge while introducing new ideas, materials, and processes for artistic thinking and experimentation. Students will refine their application of design elements and principles, incorporating creative and design processes, and exploring the relationship between form and content. Additionally, they will learn about the connections between works of art and their historical contexts.

Unit 1: Drawing Fundamentals
Students will revisit fundamental drawing techniques like perspective and line balance, focusing on detailed assignments such as grid drawing, themed art pieces, and hand sketches.

Unit 2: Exploration in Painting
The unit covers various painting techniques using mediums like watercolor, acrylic, and tempera. Projects include silhouette art in watercolor, vinyl and pointillism styles in acrylic, and color theory applications in tempera.

Unit 3: Introduction to Printmaking
Students will learn linocut printmaking, covering the design process and examining influential historical printmakers, culminating in the creation of their own linocut prints.

Unit 4: Sculpture Techniques
This unit explores the design and creation of sculptures, with students undertaking projects like carving and painting foam blocks.

Unit 5: Independent Study Unit (ISU)
For their final project, students analyze a specific art movement or period, composing a five-paragraph essay and creating an artwork reflective of that style, accounting for 30% of their total course grade.
