Course Overview
This course provides opportunities for students to communicate in French about personally relevant, familiar, and academic topics in real-life situations with increasing independence. Students will exchange information, ideas, and opinions with others in guided and increasingly spontaneous spoken interactions. Students will develop their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing through the selective use of strategies that contribute to effective communication. They will also increase their understanding and appreciation of diverse French-speaking communities, and will develop skills necessary for lifelong language learning.
UNIT ONE
Listening and Speaking
Students begin their journey with French by learning to exchange basic personal information and express simple ideas. They explore foundational vocabulary and structures used in greetings, expressing preferences, and discussing dates and routines. Oral interaction and accurate use of present tense verbs build confidence in real-life situations.
UNIT TWO
Speaking and Writing
This unit focuses on describing people, hobbies, and daily routines. Students explore common verbs and adjectives, interact in practical contexts, and compare their lives with others. Through oral and written communication, they gain a deeper awareness of sociolinguistic norms and reflect on cultural similarities and differences.
UNIT THREE
Listening and Reading
Students develop narrative skills by learning to describe past events using passé composé and imparfait. Through storytelling, biographies, and historical accounts, students interpret authentic texts and craft their own personal and fictional narratives. Emphasis is placed on comprehension strategies and clear expression in both oral and written forms.
UNIT FOUR
Reading and Listening
Students explore French-speaking cultures beyond Canada, particularly in Africa and Asia. Using future tenses, they research, plan, and present travel projects while managing budgets and itineraries. By engaging with authentic materials, they broaden their global perspective and apply language skills in meaningful, real-world contexts.
