Course Overview
This course allows students to further develop and solidify the foundational knowledge and skills needed for reading, writing, and oral and visual communication. Students will enhance their media and critical literacy skills and develop transferable skills, including digital literacy. They will also connect their learning to personal experiences and society deepening their understanding of the importance of
language and literacy across the curriculum.
UNIT ONE
Myths and Heroes
- Essential Question: What does it mean to be a hero? What qualities make someone a hero? Are heroes perfect?
In this unit, students will delve into the meaning of “hero,” examining traits and characteristics associated with heroism. They will learn about the transformative journey every hero undergoes to achieve honor and glory. Key terms and definitions essential for studying short stories, mythology, and folk/fairy tales will be introduced. Students will explore the fundamental elements of short stories by reading and analyzing various mythological stories and folktales from different cultures and historical periods.
UNIT TWO
Short Stories
- Essential Question: What are the main elements of a short story, and how can I delve deeper into characters to understand the underlying meaning of a text?
Students will review the crucial elements of short stories and understand how they function in familiar and new tales. They will learn about literary devices, becoming adept at identifying these in short stories and explaining their purposes. Students will read a variety of modern and classic short stories, analyzing them to identify and explain characteristics such as perspective, length, characterization, plot, setting, and more. They will learn how to construct a theme statement and identify the mood and tone of a short story.
UNIT THREE
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet
- Essential Question: How do I begin to comprehend Shakespearean language, and how does understanding theme contribute to my overall understanding of the play?
Students will explore the life and historical context of renowned playwright William Shakespeare. They will examine the plot and major characters of “Romeo and Juliet,” one of Shakespeare’s most famous romantic plays. Essential terms and definitions for studying Shakespeare’s works will be covered. Students will become familiar with Shakespearean vocabulary and writing styles, including sonnets. They will explore key themes of “Romeo and Juliet,” such as love, fate, and identity.
UNIT FOUR
Novel Study: The Great Gatsby
- Essential Question: How do the American Dream and important symbols throughout the novel illuminate the false notions created in the 1920s? How will recognizing this deepen my understanding of the novel?
Students will explore the culture and lifestyle of the 1920s, a prosperous and exciting period in history. They will learn what it means for a novel to be considered a classic and how to read it with an informed perspective. Students will examine intriguing characters, understanding their actions and motivations. By reading and analyzing “The Great Gatsby,” students will explore key elements of plot, theme, and symbolism.
