Course Overview
This course focuses on using social science theories, perspectives, and methodologies to investigate and explain shifts in knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behavior and their impact on society. Students will critically analyze how and why cultural, social, and behavioral patterns change over time. They will explore the ideas of social theorists and use these concepts to analyze the causes of and responses to challenges such as technological change, deviance, and global inequalities. Additionally, students will explore how social science research methods can be used to study social change.
UNIT ONE: Social Science Research and Inquiry Skills
Essential Question: What skills are necessary to conduct and present social science research?
- Students will develop foundational research skills, including understanding APA formatting, crafting research questions, formulating hypotheses, and conducting fieldwork. This unit serves as the basis for undertaking social science research throughout the course.
UNIT TWO: Foundations for the Study of Social Change
Essential Question: How do different social sciences approach the study of cultures and societal changes?
- This unit introduces students to the core disciplines of psychology, sociology, and anthropology, exploring their unique perspectives on cultural and societal changes. Students will examine various theories of social change and understand the interdisciplinary approaches to studying these phenomena.
UNIT THREE: Causes and Effects of Social Change
Essential Question: What factors drive social change, and what are their impacts on society?
- Students will analyze key figures and movements that have influenced global social change, the role of social conformity and alienation, and the impacts of poverty, affluence, and technology on society. This unit deepens students’ understanding of the complex interactions that drive societal shifts.
UNIT FOUR: Social Patterns and Trends
Essential Question: What are the current social patterns and trends in Canada, and how do they inform our understanding of societal changes?
- In this unit, students will investigate current demographics, social determinants, and theories related to generational influences on social changes. The focus will also be on understanding social deviance and its various interpretations within Canadian society.
UNIT FIVE: Global Social Challenges
Essential Question: How do globalization and interconnectedness present challenges and opportunities for societies worldwide?
- The final unit explores global challenges related to the distribution of wealth and resources, theories of globalization, and the effects of these dynamics on global inequality and exploitation. Students will critically examine the role of globalization in shaping modern societies and the varying impacts on different groups and nations.
Assessment
- Coursework (70%): Students will engage in a series of assignments, projects, and discussions that reflect their understanding and application of social science theories and research methodologies.
- Final Evaluation (30%): The course concludes with a comprehensive evaluation that includes a research project and a final exam. These assessments are designed to test students’ mastery of the material and their ability to apply their learning to complex social science questions.
