Course Overview
This course enables students to draw on sociological, psychological, and anthropological theories and research to analyze the development of individuals, intimate relationships, and family and parent-child relationships. Students will focus on the issues and challenges facing individuals and families in Canada’s diverse society. They will develop analytical tools to assess various factors affecting families and consider policies and practices designed to support families in Canada. Additionally, students will develop the investigative skills required to conduct and communicate research on individuals, intimate relationships, and parent-child relationships.
UNIT ONE: Families and Theoretical Perspectives
Essential Question: What constitutes a successful family, and how is this perceived across different cultures?
- This unit introduces students to the concept of the family, both historically and in contemporary Canadian society. It examines how family structures have evolved and the factors driving these changes. The unit also covers foundational social science theories that will be used to analyze family dynamics throughout the course.
UNIT TWO: Individuals
Essential Question: At what stages and through what processes do individuals prepare for adulthood?
- Students will explore the developmental pathways of individuals from adolescence to old age, focusing on the transitions that mark the journey to adulthood. The unit will delve into theories of maturation, individualization, and socialization, and examine how education and employment influence these processes.
UNIT THREE: Social Science Research
Essential Question: How can social science research shape our understanding of family dynamics?
- This unit equips students with the methodologies of social science research, including how to formulate research questions, conduct literature reviews, and apply primary and secondary research techniques. Students will also refine their skills in APA formatting and scholarly writing.
UNIT FOUR: Couples
Essential Question: What factors contribute to the success of intimate relationships and marriages?
- In this unit, students will analyze the development of romantic relationships, from dating to marriage. Topics such as divorce, role negotiation, and the impact of cultural practices like arranged marriages and intermarriage on relationship success will be explored.
UNIT FIVE: Parent-Child Relationships
Essential Question: What parenting styles are most effective in fostering healthy development?
- The final unit focuses on the dynamics between parents and children, examining different parenting styles and their effectiveness. It also addresses societal responsibilities towards families, and issues of child, spousal, and elder abuse, providing students with knowledge to recognize and respond to these serious concerns.
Assessment
- Coursework (70%): Students’ grades will be based on their engagement with course materials, assignments, projects, and participation in discussions that demonstrate their understanding of the course content.
- Final Evaluation (30%): The course concludes with a comprehensive evaluation that includes a research project and a final exam. These assessments are designed to test students’ comprehensive understanding of the material and their ability to apply theoretical concepts to practical and social issues.
HHS4U online not only aims to deepen students’ knowledge of societal dynamics but also enhances their ability to think critically about ethical, cultural, and psychological factors influencing individuals and families. Through this course, students are prepared for further studies in fields such as psychology, sociology, education, and social work.
