Course Overview
This course emphasizes knowledge and skills related to the craft of writing. Students will investigate models of effective writing, use a workshop approach to create various works, and make thoughtful decisions to improve their writing quality. They will also complete a creative or analytical independent study project and explore opportunities for publication and writing careers.
UNIT ONE: The Writer’s Toolbox
Essential Question: What foundational skills do I need to become a more effective writer?
- This introductory unit focuses on establishing good writing habits, understanding grammar rules, and beginning a writer’s journal. Students engage in creative writing exercises and tackle longer writing assignments to practice these skills.
UNIT TWO: Writers on Writing
Essential Question: How can I learn from established writers to enhance my own writing?
- Students explore the insights and techniques of renowned writers, analyzing how these influences can improve their own writing. This unit also introduces career paths in writing, emphasizing the societal impact of literary works.
UNIT THREE: Poetry
Essential Question: How can I use poetry to effectively convey emotions and ideas?
- The unit delves into various poetry forms, encouraging students to both analyze and create their own poems. The inclusion of spoken word poetry broadens their understanding of poetic expression and its performance aspects.
UNIT FOUR: Short Stories

- Students learn to analyze short stories for deeper meanings and symbols and practice compressing dialogue to enhance narrative effectiveness. The unit culminates in students writing their own short stories, applying the techniques studied.
UNIT FIVE: Children’s Stories: Fairytales & Dialogue

- This unit allows students to tap into their imaginative side to create enchanting children’s stories or plays. Focus is given to fairy tale structure, character development for children, and effective dialogue writing.
UNIT SIX: The Memoir and Execution Poems

- Students explore the memoir genre, including its structure and elements of personal storytelling. They examine notable memoirs and engage in writing their own, encouraged to articulate their personal experiences and truths.
UNIT SEVEN: The Writer’s Journal

- Coursework (70%): Continuous assessment through writing assignments, projects, and participation in workshops, focusing on the incremental development of writing skills and creativity.
- Final Evaluation (30%): Consists of a major independent project and a reflective essay based on their writer’s journal, demonstrating their cumulative learning and readiness for potential publication or further writing endeavors.
