Course Overview
This course emphasizes consolidating literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. Students will analyze various informational and graphic texts, as well as literary texts from different countries and cultures, and create oral, written, and media texts in various forms for practical and academic purposes. A key focus will be on using language with precision and clarity and developing greater control in writing. The course is intended to prepare students for college or the workplace.

UNIT ONE: Foundations
Essential Question: What makes a person a lifelong, global learner?

  • This introductory unit sets the stage for the course, encouraging students to establish themselves as active participants in a learning community. It focuses on fostering reflective thinking, effective communication, and foundational skills necessary for successful learning throughout the course.

UNIT TWO: Short Stories
Essential Question: How can stories express who we are?

  • Students explore the genre of short stories, particularly focusing on Canadian literature, to understand narrative techniques and the power of storytelling in expressing human experiences and identities.

UNIT THREE: Media Studies
Essential Question: How do we shape the media and how does the media shape our lives?

  • This unit delves into media literacy, exploring the impact of media on society and individuals. Topics include ethical journalism, the phenomenon of ‘fake news,’ and advertising standards in Canada, aiming to equip students with the skills to critically engage with media.

UNIT FOUR: Classic Fiction Study
Essential Question: How can humanity be reflected in literature?

  • Students engage with classic fiction to explore universal themes and the relevance of classical literature in modern times. This unit emphasizes the personal and societal benefits of reading and reflective writing.

UNIT FIVE: Shakespeare’s Hamlet
Essential Question: Why can classic literature have enduring appeal to humanity?

  • An in-depth study of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” allows students to explore the complexity of Shakespearean themes, language, and its relevance today. This unit highlights how classic works continue to resonate across different cultures and historical periods.

UNIT SIX: Contemporary Literature
Essential Question: What can make us global citizens?

  • The course concludes with a study of “I Am Malala,” the memoir of Malala Yousafzai. This unit focuses on contemporary issues such as education, rights, and global citizenship, encouraging students to consider their roles as part of a global community.

Assessment

  • Coursework (70%): Students’ performance will be evaluated through a variety of assignments including essays, projects, presentations, and participation in discussions throughout the course. This component reflects students’ ongoing engagement and mastery of course objectives.
  • Final Evaluation (30%): The final assessment includes a culminating project and a proctored final exam. The project encourages students to synthesize their learning and apply their skills in a comprehensive manner, while the exam assesses their overall understanding of the course material.
