- This foundational unit introduces students to the historical and cultural underpinnings of Canadian law. Students explore the influence of various legal traditions on Canadian jurisprudence, including common law origins and the impact of multicultural values. Topics such as legal responses to issues in a multicultural society, like the debate on kirpans and vice laws, are examined to illustrate how legal theories and philosophies are applied in modern Canadian contexts.

This unit covers significant constitutional milestones such as the BNA Act and the Meech Lake Accord, alongside contemporary issues like the Quebec independence movement and the application of the Notwithstanding Clause. Theoretical underpinnings regarding the causes of crime and acceptable legal defenses are also critically analyzed.
