Course Overview
This course examines the global challenges of creating a sustainable and equitable future by focusing on current issues that illustrate these challenges. Students will investigate a range of topics, including cultural, economic, and geopolitical relationships, regional disparities in meeting basic human needs, and the protection of the natural environment. They will use geotechnologies and skills in geographic inquiry and analysis to develop and communicate balanced opinions about the complex issues facing Canada and an interdependent, constantly changing world.
UNIT ONE
Perspective and Issue Analysis
Essential Question: How should issues be addressed from different societal perspectives?
Students will analyze the nature and perspectives of global issues, using media to understand the relevance to Canadians and different approaches to addressing issues at various levels, from local to global.
UNIT TWO
Globalization, Sustainability, and Stewardship
Essential Question: What are the consequences of global cultural, economic, and political exchanges?
This unit delves into the effects of globalization and sustainability on cultural and economic interactions, highlighting significant historical trading routes like the Silk Road and the impact of modern policies and technology on global trade and environmental footprints.
UNIT THREE
Human Population Issues
Essential Question: What are the worldwide effects of demographic trends?
Students will explore demographic fundamentals, global population trends, and the consequences of increasing international migration, analyzing its impact on global and regional scales.
UNIT FOUR
Food Issues
Essential Question: What global challenges affect food supply and distribution?
In this unit, students evaluate global food security issues, comparing dietary patterns worldwide and considering the unique challenges faced by different regions in securing food resources.
UNIT FIVE
Wealth Disparity Issues
Essential Question: How do regional economic differences impact global economic disparities?
