Course Overview
This course introduces students to advanced accounting principles to prepare them for postsecondary studies in business. Students will learn about financial statements for various forms of business ownership and how to interpret these statements for business decision-making. The course expands students’ knowledge of financing sources, further develops accounting methods for assets, and introduces accounting for partnerships and corporations.
UNIT ONE
Essential Question: How do businesses organize their financial activities?
Students will start by understanding accounting principles relevant throughout the course, helping them make informed decisions under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). They’ll learn to analyze transactions and prepare journal and adjusting entries to generate financial statements.
UNIT TWO
Essential Question: How do businesses organize their financial activities affecting assets?
This unit focuses on asset management in merchandising companies, exploring inventory valuation and accounts receivable—key assets influencing profits. Students will compare different accounting methods for these assets.
UNIT THREE
Essential Question: What are the advantages and disadvantages of a sole proprietorship?
Students will compare business structures, including partnerships and corporations, and learn how equity accounting differs between them, such as “owner’s equity” in partnerships versus “shareholder’s equity” in corporations.
UNIT FOUR
Essential Question: How do businesses organize their business activities?
The focus here is on financial analysis and decision-making, using financial statements and other accounting tools. Students will assess a business’s financial position through quarterly and annual reports to support decision-making processes.
