THE ONTARIO CURRICULUM: The Arts
Course Overview
This course provides students with opportunities to further develop their skills and knowledge in visual arts. Students will explore a range of subject matter through studio activities and will consolidate their practical skills. Additionally, students will analyze artworks and study aspects of Western Art History, as well as art forms from Canada and other parts of the world.
UNIT ONE
Reviewing Terms and Approaches
In this unit, students will revisit fundamental terms and methodologies essential for art analysis. They will delve into the creative process, art elements and principles, and the critical analysis framework. Additionally, students will refine techniques for photographing their artwork for online sharing and learn about effective sketchbook organization.
UNIT TWO
Choosing a Personal Portfolio Theme
This unit encourages students to utilize insights gained from the previous unit to start conceptualizing their semester-long art portfolio. They will deepen their understanding of sketchbooks and submit a comprehensive proposal outlining their portfolio theme.
UNIT THREE
Exploring Collections in Visual Art
- Essential Question: Why do art collections play a crucial role in our comprehension of the world?
Students will explore how Canadian artists and a notable philanthropist have engaged with the concept of collecting. They will conduct research both in written form and through their sketchbooks and create a sophisticated piece of art based on this theme. This unit includes sharing and reflecting on their work, embodying the stages of the formal creative process.
UNIT FOUR
Exploring Spaces in Visual Art
- Essential Question: How does the environment (space) influence the display of art in museums?
In this unit, students will investigate how Canadian artists and architects have addressed the theme of environmental space. They will produce a detailed artwork reflecting this theme, accompanied by research and sketches. The students will present their work and reflect on it, adhering to the established stages of the creative process.
UNIT FIVE
Exploring Community through Visual Art
- Essential Question: How does the environment (space) influence the display of art in museums?
This unit focuses on the influence of community connections on Canadian artists and organizations. Students will create artwork inspired by these community themes, supported by thorough written and sketch-based research. They will showcase and reflect on their pieces, following the formal creative process steps
UNIT SIX
Exploring Causes through Visual Art
- Essential Question: How can art drive positive societal change?
Students will learn about how Canadian artists and organizations have used art to advocate for causes and promote activism. They will produce a comprehensive artwork related to this theme, conducting both written and sketch-based research. The unit culminates with students sharing and reflecting on their work, embodying the formal creative process steps.
